78 rpm records, 45 rpm singles, 33 rpm long play albums, reel to reel tapes, cassette players, CDs, iPods, and finally Spotify. I have experienced every stage of music consumption. With each innovation, I found myself saying, “Incredible, look how far technology has come.”
Let me share something that happened to me a few years ago.
My CD player had broken down, and I still had a collection of CDs that I regularly listened to and could not simply discard. I went to a shopping mall planning to buy a new CD player. I assumed I would easily find one in the electronics stores.
After visiting several shops and hearing “We do not carry that anymore,” I approached one final store. The salesperson looked at me and said, “Sir, what era are you living in? Do you still listen to music on CDs?”
I left without answering. On the way out, I realized something important. Technology had moved on, and I had not fully noticed.

ToggleDigital Transformation in Business
Since joining Octet, I often recall that moment.
Why?
Because I sometimes visit well established companies where a senior executive proudly says, “We now accept credit card payments.” After congratulating them, I ask, “How do you process them?” When the answer is “via mail order,” the same thought crosses my mind: What era are you living in?
Of course, I do not say it out loud.
I first encountered the mail order system in the early 1970s abroad. At that time, it was known as catalog sales. Large retailers, similar to today’s ecommerce platforms, distributed monthly printed catalogs to wide audiences. Customers selected products, filled in order forms with product codes, wrote their credit card details on the same form, signed it, and mailed it back.
In a pre internet world, it was a practical solution. However, it carried significant risks. Full credit card information was shared on paper. If that form fell into the wrong hands, the consequences could be serious. At the time, point of sale devices were mechanical and required physical card usage, which limited large scale fraud.
Today, however, anyone with card details can make online purchases instantly up to the credit limit. Fraud can happen within seconds. The risks are far greater.
So why continue using an outdated payment method that carries clear security vulnerabilities when secure digital alternatives are readily available?

So once again, it is worth asking:
What era are you living in?
