Hardly a day goes by without a new invention or application entering our lives. Behind many of these innovations stands a fintech, biotech, or adtech company. So what exactly are these “tech” companies?
Large corporations often move slowly when it comes to decision making. In other words, their ability to adapt quickly is limited. They may struggle to respond to rapidly changing business and technological environments. In today’s world, where technology evolves at remarkable speed, many brilliant ideas can quickly transform into new products or applications. Even when innovators work within large corporations, they often prefer to develop and implement their ideas independently.
As a result, highly dynamic technology driven startups are emerging in fields such as finance, healthcare, advertising, and insurance. These ventures adapt instantly to technological shifts and introduce digital products that integrate into our daily lives, significantly improving quality of life.
It is also important to remember global technology giants such as Google, PayPal, Alibaba, Amazon, and Facebook. Each began as the vision of one or two individuals with a powerful idea. Over time, as these companies expanded, they inevitably became more complex and less agile. Yet the creative ecosystems they built continue to generate new ideas, new applications, and new startups.
Today, the industries most intensively shaped by technology include on demand services, ecommerce, financial services, internet platforms, software development, big data analytics, social and digital media, consumer electronics, automotive technologies, and cybersecurity.
Common categories of tech driven startups include fintech in financial services, biotech in healthcare and life sciences, adtech in advertising technology, insurtech in insurance innovation, and regtech in regulatory compliance solutions.

ToggleThe Rise of Fintech
Fintech is particularly relevant to us. In Türkiye, there are numerous startups of various sizes that can be classified as fintech companies. Both globally and locally, some fintech firms operating in banking and payment services are subject to legal regulation. This is critically important because financial transactions require stability, transparency, and trust. Where money flows, long term sustainability and regulatory compliance are essential. Businesses working with fintech providers must evaluate reliability and compliance carefully.
The dot com crisis of the 1990s reminds us that rapid technological growth can also carry risks. Innovation must be balanced with sound fundamentals.
From One Generation to the Next
My father was born in 1907. The most significant invention he witnessed in his lifetime was undoubtedly the airplane. In my view, the defining invention of my generation is the computer. Calculating the mathematical model for my doctoral thesis took six months. Today, the same calculation takes five seconds.
For my children, the most transformative invention is the internet. They cannot imagine life without it. For my grandchildren, the most remarkable innovation so far is video communication. What we once saw only in science fiction comics is now reality. I notice that they instinctively try to enlarge images in printed books using two fingers. At this pace of innovation, my grandchildren may very well witness interplanetary travel.
Business life has evolved just as dramatically. When I began my career in the mid 1970s, letters of credit were issued to correspondent banks via telex machines, devices that many young professionals today have never seen. Intercity check and promissory note collections took days. Long distance communication required scheduling calls through operators in the morning to be connected by evening.
Today, business moves at the speed of a smartphone. Financial transactions are executed instantly. Paper and coins belong to earlier eras. Checks and promissory notes are relics of the last century. Commerce operates online, and international business travel is often replaced by virtual meetings.
Digital Transformation and Business Readiness
It is worth pausing to reflect. In a rapidly digitalizing world, what steps have you taken for your business? Which processes have you moved to digital platforms? What measurable benefits have you achieved in efficiency, transparency, or cost reduction?
