Now is the time to digitalize checks!

In today’s commercial environment, where traditional collection systems are being phased out and cash cycles increasingly operate without manual intervention, the conventional paper check remains widely used. However, it is rapidly approaching a turning point. The transition toward digital checks is no longer optional. It is becoming inevitable.

According to data from the Risk Center of the Banks Association of Türkiye, 16.9 million checks issued by 515 thousand drawers were presented to banks in 2022, reaching a total value of 2.652 trillion Turkish Lira. Compared to the previous year, this represents an 11 percent increase in the number of checks, an 8 percent increase in the number of drawers, and a remarkable 92 percent increase in total check value.

These figures demonstrate that checks remain a strong and widely preferred payment instrument in trade. At the same time, they highlight the growing transaction volume that still relies on physical documentation.

A Major Step for Digital Payment Systems

While nearly all payment instruments are undergoing digital transformation, checks, which often serve as a guarantee for sellers, must also evolve. The legal recognition and implementation of digital checks would represent a significant milestone for payment systems. Such a transformation would provide users with a more convenient, secure, and controllable structure.

The legalization of digital checks would eliminate many of the operational challenges associated with traditional paper checks. Physical handling requirements, endorsement procedures, maturity tracking, and bank presentation processes would no longer create administrative burdens for buyers and sellers.

Accelerating Trade Finance and Working Capital

Perhaps even more importantly, a physical check cannot be divided. In a digital environment, however, the recipient of a check could allocate part of its value to one supplier and endorse another portion to a different company, all through secure digital transactions. Alternatively, part of the check could be retained while the remainder is transferred.

Once fully digitalized, buyers would be able to issue digital checks directly from their mobile devices and complete payments to suppliers seamlessly. The system would automatically record maturity dates, eliminating the need for manual follow up and reducing operational risk.

The digitalization of checks would also significantly accelerate financing processes. Sellers would gain easier access to liquidity through digital platforms, enabling faster conversion of receivables into working capital. With just a few clicks, businesses could access structured financing solutions integrated into secure digital ecosystems.
